For the recommended serving size, always check the package. Otherwise, a good rule of thumb is: Main dish &ndash 12 cup uncooked rice per person. Side dish &ndash 14 cup uncooked rice per person. If you make more than you need, no problem &ndash store the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge and make fried rice the next day with a smattering of soy sauce, vegetables and egg. A trusty rice cooker is a dependable companion, but certainly not the only way to cook a perfect pot of rice. Following are a few cooking methods explained: This is the most common way to cook rice, though by no means the most simple.

Cover grains with a measured amount of liquid (roughly 2 parts water: 1 part rice, check package for specifics) bring it to a boil, cover with a tight fitting lid, reduce the heat to low, and simmer until all the liquid has been absorbed and the grains are tender. As the water level drops, trapped steam finishes the cooking. Stand covered for 5 minutes, fluff with a fork and serve. &bull Variation 1 &ndash Steaming: This method is similar to the absorption method, but after simmering for 8-10 minutes, transfer the rice to a colander and steam over the pan of boiling water until cooked through. &bull Variation 2 &ndash Toasting: This method involves cooking dry rice grains in oil over medium heat for a few minutes, before adding liquid to the pot. This process helps bring out the grains&rsquo natural nutty, toasty aromas. Once grains are toasted, add the measured amount of liquid. Once it reaches a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer the grains until the liquid is absorbed and the grains are tender. &bull Variation 3 &ndash Microwaving: Use a microwave-safe container large enough to hold twice as much rice and water as you start with (or it will boil over). Cover with plastic wrap and heat on high until cooked through. TIP 1: Forget About It! One of the most common blunders made by the home cook when preparing rice this way is to remove the lid frequently to check the progress of the water absorption. It is important to keep the moisture (in the form of steam) in the pan. While the rice is cooking, simply cover the pan and forget about it&hellip until the cooking time is up, then check!

TIP 2: DO NOT Stir It Up! It is also important not to stir the rice during the cooking, because stirring releases starch from the rice, which will cause it to become sticky. This method involves adding grains to a large pot of salted, boiling water and cooking. Strain once the grains are tender. This avoids any need to measure the correct amount of water to absorb. Tip 3: Don&rsquot Stress About Cooking Time: Let your rice cook. Be confident in the knowledge that even burnt rice is considered a delicacy in some culinary traditions. &bull Use vegetable or chicken broth instead of water for boiling the rice (for the adventurous, try unsweetened apple juice or jasmine tea) &bull Sauté raw rice grains with garlic, onion and spices during the "Toasting" method. &bull Serve with a pat of butter or a generous sprinkling of Parmesan cheese. &bull Toss cooked rice with fresh herbs (cilantro, thyme, chives, basil or sage) and a squeeze of lime. Common Terms Explained. Al dente &ndash Italian for "to the tooth." Al dente describes a firm, chewy texture when cooled. Bran &ndash The protective outer layer of a cereal grain that is responsible for the nutty flavor and brown color. Brown Rice &ndash Whole cereal grain with the bran and germ layers still intact. Compared to white rice, it&rsquos more fibrous and nutrient-rich, though the cooking time tends to be longer and the shelf life much shorter. Enriched Rice &ndash The process in which thiamine, niacin and iron are added back to rice that has been stripped of these nutrients during the milling process. Germ &ndash The germ is the embryo of the rice kernel.

It's nutrient dense, containing vitamins, minerals, protein and oils. Glutinous &ndash Refers to a sticky texture. The consistency of "sticky" rice is determined by two kinds of starch in the kernels: amylose and amylopectin. The more amylopectin, the stickier the texture. Note: &ldquoGlutinous&rdquo is not the same as &ldquoGlutenous&rdquo (containing gluten). Long-grain &ndash The grain length-to-height ratio is about 4-to-1. Typically dry and firm once cooked. Medium-grain &ndash The grain length-to-height ratio is about 3-to-1. Often grouped with Short-grain rice. Parboiled (converted rice) &ndash Parboiled rice has been partially boiled in the hull. The three steps of parboiling are soaking, steaming and drying. These steps make it easier to process the rice by hand, while boosting its nutritional profile and changing its texture. Rinsing &ndash Washing the rice with water prior to cooking to remove excess starch and improve texture and taste. This can be repeated up to 2-3 times until water becomes clear.

Short-grain &ndash The grain length-to-height ratio is about 1-to-1. Typically sticky and soft once cooked. Soaking &ndash Though not required, soaking rice in water for an hour before cooking can reduce the cooking time and help with digestion by allowing more moisture to penetrate the center of the kernel. Sprouted &ndash Rice is soaked in warm water prior to cooking to stimulate germination, which activates enzymes to deliver a more complete amino acid profile. Quick-Cook &ndash The process in which raw rice is scratched, or scarified, which means the grains of rice are rubbed, or bumped, against each other, opening pathways for water to penetrate the grains while cooking. Then the rice is briefly steamed, which makes it bendable which is important for the next step, when the rice is rolled. The rolling allows for faster water absorption when cooking. These three simple processes cut the cooking time by about 65%. White Rice &ndash Brown rice with the bran and germ layers removed, resulting in a shorter cooking time, longer shelf life, tender texture, and sweet flavor. Whole Grain &ndash A cereal grain where the germ, endosperm, and bran are intact. How Much Money Do Commodity Brokers Make? Compensation for commodity brokers is generally on a commission basis this means they receive a percentage of the gross commissions from the trades placed by their customers. Commissions are the fees associated with execution of buying and selling orders. While some commodity brokers are highly successful, and many brokers fail in the first six months, it is misleading to look at industry averages to come up with an accurate estimate of what a typical commodity broker earns. Commission rates have decreased dramatically since the late 1990s with the advent of online trading and that has had an impact on the earnings for commodity brokers. However, there are still many commodity brokers who make an excellent living and many people desire to pursue a career in this field.

Many new brokers starting in the business struggle to earn enough to pay their living expenses. Starting out means building a book of business and this can take time. While some can survive the initial economic pain of low earnings while starting out, others become frustrated and leave the business. Building a business first requires an education in the commodities futures business, and then a sales effort to attract customers. Brokers who have got over the hump of starting a business and have built a reasonable book of business can make a better than average living. Even if these brokers lack excellent sales skills or are mediocre traders, they often can survive in the business. These types of brokers tend to earn between $30,000 and $70,000 each year. The top tier of commodity brokers often has one of two skills. They are either fantastic salespersons or excellent traders. A commodity broker who is a top salesperson or marketer attracts new business, even if they are not necessarily a great trader. There is a small percentage of commodity brokers who possess both skills. These brokers also tend to attract larger accounts, which translates to a high flow of trades and commissions. These professionals who are the top tier of brokers can earn six or seven figure income each year. The cream of the crop when it comes to the commodities futures brokerage business tend to have clients like hedge funds who transact large volumes of futures business on a daily basis.

Changes in the Commodity Brokerage Business. The business of commodity brokerage has changed dramatically with the advent of electronic trading. Today, electronic platforms do the job formerly done by commodity brokers with a higher degree of speed and efficiency and at a much lower price. Many commodity futures brokers have become electronic traders. Others have moved into other fields within the commodity futures business. Some have become CTAs, CPOs, IBs or money managers. Others have concentrated on clearing or other services for larger traders or fund managers. The days of the old pit trading commodity brokers have come to an end. However, those brokers with strong market skills are still in demand as they can provide valuable advice and analysis for clients who compensate them by transacting through the broker. However, it is still possible to make money in the commodity business as a broker, in some cases by raising money for fund managers. There is still a thriving business for physical brokers who arrange transactions between producers and consumers around the world. These businesspeople tend to be experts in a particular commodity and use their vast network of contacts and knowledge to profit from arranging physical transactions around the world. The commodity business has transitioned over the past years, but there are always opportunities for knowledgeable professionals who understand the markets and have contacts.

Those starting out in the business would do well to apprentice under a seasoned mentor who is a commodity broker or professional involved in some aspect of the business. Like in any discipline, hard work and competency usually result in rewards for those who persevere. If you wish to become a successful commodities broker, there are many online study courses for the series three exam that will familiarize you with the ins and outs of the business. However, the best way to learn this exciting and fast-paced business is to apprentice under an experienced professional who already has years of experience. Commodities brokerage can be a lucrative business but the rewards tend to flow to the most knowledgeable and competent brokers with a track record of success. Successful and well-compensated commodities broker often gets new customers by recommendations from current contracts who profit from their experience. A Prop Trader Explains His Work, His Salary, And Why Everyone Is Wrong About His Profession. This is totally awesome, mainly because prop traders are something a lot of people talk about, but few people really know about. Here, one London quant sits down and takes you through his job (which, in this industry, is life), step-by-step. The interview is from a must-read column in The Guardian by Joris Luyendijk called "Banking Blog: Going native in the world of finance.

" If you don't check it, you should, and Joris, if you're out there, we're fans. In this installment, Lauyendijk introduces his readers to "an inconspicuous-looking man, originally from continental Europe. He orders a vegetarian pasta and sparkling water." Check out some of our favorite parts below. On how he does his job: " Prop traders come in two varieties, too. The 'pure' prop traders have a view on the market that day and act on that. 'Quantitative' prop traders like me have a systematic view, meaning I build strategies and then trade them longer term on the market. " How that works: I will have an idea about a pattern in the market , say, if the share price of two English banks with a broadly similar outlook diverge, they will most likely converge again very soon. Or I might look at the ways unusual rainfall in Argentina translates into higher wheat prices. " That'll be my 'idea'.

Next is statistical analysis . "I will also determine my 'confidence range' : how likely is the pattern to play out. " On the greatest misunderstanding about prop traders: "What outsiders are concerned about is speculation if you trade large enough volumes you begin to impact the market itself, you 'move the market'. I would never consciously try to raise the price of, say, rice, and starve children in China. Quite apart from the morals, it is actually very difficult to make a profit out of that. You drive up the price of something by buying more and more of it. The thing is, players in the market are going to notice that. And so they will quote rapidly higher prices to you since they realise that you want to buy a large chunk of the overall market with all your money. It is absolutely forbidden to do a quick in-and-out when you've pushed up the price yourself. It's called price manipulation and regulators are really strict about that, you get sanctioned even if it happened by mistake and was really unintentional." On not working for a hedge fund: Well, hedge funds work with other people's money, and they can suddenly go into a panic and take their money out. That kind of thing can really wreck your method. My salary is Ј150,000 a year plus bonus. This bonus can dwarf my salary and be multiples higher. In this business you can exactly pinpoint profits, and people like me get paid roughly a percentage of those profits.

And his parting words? He works really hard, and most of that work in his life has been dedicated to getting to where he is now - and that has made him humble. "Speaking of humility, which I might seem to lack now, I wish I had any artistic skill. I can't sing, paint or play any instrument. But give me some time and I'll work on it." Four Simple Ways to Become a Better Price Action Trader. Price action and Macro. Price Action is a form of technical analysis that focuses solely on past prices that have traded in the market This article contains a simple, and complex method for new traders to begin learning price action This study can be furthered in the live sessions on DailyFX in which Analysts and Instructors explain price action in real market conditions. One of my favorite phrases to use in webinars is as follows: &lsquoPrice Action is my favorite indicator, because it&rsquos the only one that will never tell me a lie.&rsquo And this is true albeit maybe a little &lsquoopaque&rsquo for new traders, or even experienced traders that haven&rsquot yet found the study of price action. The study of price action entails reading past prices, to build an approach or plan for the future. Surely, most traders that end up &lsquomaking it&rsquo as a trader will find this specific study of technical analysis eventually but it&rsquos usually only after multiple disappointments and failed attempts at building indicator-based strategies that zig when the market actually &lsquozags.&rsquo So, please allow me to elaborate on my earlier statement.

Price action will never lie to us, as traders, because it never purports to tell us what WILL happen but rather it only tells us what HAS happened. There is a chasm of disconnect between these two premises. As a trader, you will NEVER truly know what will happen in the future. Any indicator or indication of what MAY happen in the future is just a possibility. And even then, it could be a remote possibility at best because that indicator you&rsquore using - well, it&rsquos really just a fancy way of looking at previous price action. So, regardless of the method - those same boring concepts of risk, trade, and money management are of the upmost importance to the trader. But after that - traders can focus on getting the probabilities on their side as much as possible through analysis, and this is where price action can really shine. Because, once again - this is a &lsquoclean&rsquo way of looking at past prices, without the obfuscation of a mathematical formula that may be obscuring what&rsquos happened in the recent past. Below are four simple ways that traders can become better at reading, reacting, and analyzing price action. Met hod 1 - The Price Action Primer. If you&rsquove been to DailyFX over the past couple of years, you may have encountered a previous article on price action . We talk about this A LOT because of all the aforementioned reasons, and quite simply - it works.

Not that it works in telling us the future, but it works in allowing us to see the past as efficiently and honestly as possible. Method 2: Gra de Trends by Focusing on Swings. One of the first pillars of technical analysis centers on that age-old saying of &lsquothe trend is your friend.&rsquo And the reason for this goes right back to one of those very first things we touched on at the beginning of this article: The future really is unpredictable. But trends take place for reasons, right? Maybe it was a QE announcement, or a Debt Crisis - whatever the reason, trends exist much like the tide of the ocean exists. And just like swimmers in the ocean, traders are often best served by going with the flow. Because, if we look at trading as pessimistically as we can, and we assume that any individual trade is akin to flipping a coin, then we have a 5050 chance of price moving up or down, right? Well, if that bias continues, and further - if we are trading in the direction of that bias, it stands to reason that we can begin moving our chances or probabilities of success slightly better than a 5050 split. Perhaps it&rsquos small, perhaps as small as 5149 in our favor, or 5248 - but the logic is the same.

If what has happened continues happening, I may stand a better-than-fair chance at success. If we add in strong money management, well - now we have an entire method! Traders can read and gauge trends using solely price action. We expand on this topic in our Introduction to Price Action but we can simply look to the chart to point out the trend. Up-trends will often be highlighted wit h higher-highs, and lower-lows. Meanwhile, down-trends will se e lower-lows, and lower-highs. And this, in-and-of-itself, is very powerful. but the big question you need to ask yourself is whether it is enough to just simply &lsquobuy&rsquo when prices have been moving higher, or to &lsquosell&rsquo when prices have been moving lower? The answer is a definitive &lsquono.&rsquo And the reason is because, once again, we want to try to get the best possible chances of success in the market given the information available to us, and for that we can move on to the next method.

Method 3: Use Price Action to Highlight Valuable Support and Resistance. The second primary aspect of technical analysis is Support and Resistance , and this is another message that the study of prices can bring to us. Price Swings can identify support and resistance in the market. Reading &lsquoswings&rsquo in the market is an easy way to begin doing this. A swing can, quite simply, be classified as an inflection point in the market. We discussed this topic in the article Price Action Swings, and have added an illustration below to highlight this point. The swing in the market is the point at which demand outstripped supply (in the case of a swing low setting support), or supply ran over demand (creating a swing high of resistance before prices moved lower). Traders can use these progressively higher swing-highs, and higher swing-lows to define an up-trend. Each of these swing-highs offering a point of support with which traders may be able to look to buy into the up-trend &lsquocheaply.&rsquo Higher swing-lows define support in an up-trend. They can also use progressively lower-lows, and lower-highs to denominate a down-trend. And, of course, each of these lower &lsquoswing-highs&rsquo become levels of resistance that traders can use.

Lower swing-highs define resistance in a down-trend. We can even rope in some additional Support and Resistance studies in an attempt to find really important levels. Psychological levels , for instance, can be a great way of pointing out swings that might have a little more importance in the market place. Fibonacci can be another fantastic addition to Price Action to point out levels that other traders may be watching for. After traders can identify swings with support and resistance inflections, traders can then begin looking to buy up-trends cheaply, at or near support while traders can look to sell expensively when prices are at or near resistance. Which brings us to the exact entry of the trade&hellip Method 4: Use Price Action Formations to Trig ger into Positions. After the trend has been identified, and after traders have found support and resistance via swings displayed in the marketplace, traders can begin looking for formations to decide when, and how to enter into positions. There are quite a few of these out there, and we&rsquove talked about numerous such formations over the past few years. Most recently, we highlighted five of the most common bearish reversal patterns in the article, Trading Bearish Reversals . A Bearish Engulfing Pattern before a massive move lower. And, a favorite of price action traders, the pin bar can offer some excellent entry opportunities. I know that when I was learning price action, much of it, at least initially, felt very esoteric.

Many serious investors and traders wake up in the morning and sneak a peek at the stock futures to get a sense of where the market will open relative to the previous day's close. Others may look at the price of oil contracts or other commodities to see if money can be made by hedging their bets during the trading day. You might assume these futures contracts or options markets are another sophisticated financial instrument that Wall Street gurus created for their own disingenuous purposes, but you would be incorrect if you did.

In fact, options and futures contracts did not originate on Wall Street at all. These instruments trace their roots back thousands of years - long before they began officially trading in 1973. Check out Options for Beginners today! A futures contract enables holder to buy or sell a particular quantity of a commodity over a certain time frame for a particular price. Commodities include oil, corn, wheat, natural gas, gold, potash and many other heavily traded assets. These derivatives are commonly used by a broad range of market participants ranging from Wall Street speculators to farmers who want to ensure consistent profits on their agricultural goods. (To learn more, check out Commodity Investing 101 .) The Japanese are credited with creating the first fully functional commodities exchange in the late 17th century. The so-called elite class in Japan at the time was known as the "samurai".

During this time frame, the samurai were paid in rice, not yen, for their services. They naturally wanted to control the rice markets, where the bartering and brokering of rice took place. By establishing a formal market in which buyers and sellers would "barter" for rice, the samurai could earn a profit on a more consistent basis. Working closely with other rice brokers, the samurai started the "Dojima Rice Exchange" in 1697. This system was much different from the present Japanese agricultural exchange, the Kansai Derivative Exchange. Today's futures markets differ greatly in scope and sophistication from the barter systems first established by the Japanese. As you might suspect, technological advances have made trading options and futures more accessible to the average investor. The majority of options and futures are executed electronically and go through a clearing agency called the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC). Another feature of today's options and futures markets is their global reach.

Most major countries have futures markets and futures exchanges on products ranging from commodities, weather, stocks and now even Hollywood movie returns. The futures market, much like the stock market, has global breadth. The globalization of futures exchanges is not without risk. As we saw during the market meltdowns in 2008 and 2009, market psychology and fundamentals turned down with remarkable intensity largely due to derivative securities. If not for government intervention, the outcomes for the stock and futures markets may have been much worse. The first options were used in ancient Greece to speculate on the olive harvest however, modern option contracts commonly refer to equities. So what is a stock option and where did they originate? Simply put, a stock option contract gives the holder the right to buy or sell a set number of shares for a pre-determined price over a defined time frame. Options appear to have made their debut in what were described as "bucket shops". The bucket shop in 1920s America was made famous by a man named Jesse Livermore. Livermore speculated on stock price movements he did not actually own the securities he was betting on, but merely predicted their future prices.

At the beginning of his career, he was basically a stock option bookie, taking the opposite side of anyone who thought a particular stock may increase or decrease in price. If someone came to him speculating the stock of XYZ Company was going to go up, he would take the other side of the trade. Both have illegal trading activity at their core. The 2000 movie "Boiler Room" depicts stock brokers creating artificial demand for stock in companies with tenuous earnings - if any at all. Eventually, these companies would go under, and the unscrupulous brokers would keep the money used to purchase the shares at artificially high prices. On some occasions, the brokers would make up companies that never existed and just pocket the money. In the beginning, the commodity futures markets and stock options markets were plagued with rampant illegal activities.

Today, options are most widely traded on the Chicago Board of Options Exchange (CBOE). Just like the stock markets, options markets activities draw much scrutiny from regulatory agencies such as the SEC, and in some cases, the FBI. Today's commodities market is also highly regulated. The Commodity Exchange Act prohibits illegal trading of futures contracts and mandates the specific procedures required in the industry through the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Regulatory agencies are concerned with a variety of issues, many of which stem from the highly computerized nature of today's trading environment. Price fixing and collusion are still issues the agencies try to prohibit in order to create an "even" playing field for all investors. Today's options and futures markets originated more than two thousand years ago. This may surprise some investors, who thought stock futures and options were the sole domain of Wall Street power brokers. The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) - the largest market for stock options - basically evolved from early market trailblazers like Jesse Livermore. The first futures markets were created by Japanese samurai who hoped to corner the rice markets, while options can be traced back to the olive trade in ancient Greece.

But while these instruments originated hundreds of years ago in a world very different from ours, their continued use and increasing popularity is a testament to their ongoing utility. The pros: Trader Joe’s Spicy Thai Shrimp Fried Rice is a relatively spicy rice dish that will need some supplementing of protein in order to bring it up to the standard of a meal.
